As climate change, conflict, and neglect threaten historic sites like ancient ruins, our shared global heritage is at risk. XR—a term that includes augmented and virtual reality—offers powerful tools to help. Think of XR as using a VR headset to explore a 3D version of a place, or a smartphone app like Pokémon Go that adds filters, reconstructions, and stories to real-world locations. XR offers a way to preserve disappearing heritage—by capturing sites in 3D, enriching visits with storytelling, and making global history accessible from anywhere. Named for the ancient Carthaginian goddess of protection and the moon, Tanit is a new project launching in Tunisia—with the vision to expand globally. Our founder, Ines Said, is a Tunisian XR developer who takes inspiration from the goddess Tanit as she works to preserve the historic ruins she grew up loving. If we can protect heritage in Tunisia—using immersive technology, community storytelling, and local leadership—we can build a model to safeguard cultural sites around the world. Ines is piloting the Tanit project this year. Email info@tanitxr.org to volunteer. Want to donate to support our mission? You're in the right place! The Florida Community Innovation Foundation, Inc. is the nonprofit fiscal sponsor for Tanit and is authorized to accept donations. Just donate on this page.
