About the Film What Hugh Knew -- Hugh Shaw was a quiet, gentle giant (he stood 6’4") who loved life, his friends and family, and surfing. A tight circle of surfers, college friends and family find themselves transformed when Hugh’s life is tragically cut short two weeks before college graduation. The remaining crew launch an annual memorial surf contest that continues to foster deep personal connections nearly 40 years later, when myriad forces start to threaten the contest’s survival. What Hugh Knew explores the universal themes of love, friendship, and the power of in-person connection – timely messages in a technologically connected yet increasingly lonely world.
